What is side rein?

Side reins are pieces of equipment used in horse training to help improve the horse's balance, flexibility, and carriage. They consist of two straps that attach to either side of the horse's bit and then attach to the horse's girth or saddle.

The purpose of side reins is to encourage the horse to work in an outline or "frame," with their head and neck carried in a vertical position and their back rounded. This can help develop the horse's core muscles and improve their overall performance.

However, side reins should be used with caution and only by experienced riders or trainers, as they can be dangerous if not used correctly. Overuse or incorrect use of side reins can cause the horse to become stiff or hollow in their back, and may even cause injuries.

It is important to start using side reins gradually and with supervision, and to never leave them on the horse unattended. Proper adjustment and fit of the side reins is also crucial for their safe and effective use.
